25% – How is it possible that I am 1/4 of the way prepared for this madness?!?

This was a tough week for me.

Each workout felt like a HUGE effort. Even my recovery on Wednesday was a challenge. In the past, running in the heat wasn’t a big issue for me, so I have been doing most of my running (with the exception of Fridays and Long Run Saturdays) in the evening after work. This training cycle, the heat and humidity have been sucking the life out of me. Based upon how I’ve been feeling and the suggestion from a good friend and fellow runner, I am (grudgingly) going to do my best to rouse myself from bed early enough to run before work. There is a strong possibility that this will turn me into a very angry person for a few days, similar to the person I become during tax season. Wish me luck!

My long run today felt pretty great considering that it took place on a treadmill. 2:15:00 on a treadmill is a long time. The additional 30 minutes of running this week also seemed like it might be a big jump. I breezed past my time and distance from last weekend feeling great and was able to finish with a faster overall pace than the prior week. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that we don’t have a lot more Friday night/Saturday morning crazy thunderstorms. I love running outside on my trail!

My goals for next week are:
1. Keep working on nutrition – more protein
2. Get out of bed in time to do all of my running before work
3. Enjoy the process

If I had run on the treadmill

If I had run on the treadmill, I would have a lot fewer mosquito bites and be a lot less itchy.

If I had run on the treadmill, I would not have spent 45 minutes evaluating which orthopedic surgeon would repair my knees if I fell in the greasy, slimy mud.

If I had run on the treadmill, I would not have had to clean mud out of the bottom of my shower.

If I had run on the treadmill, I would not have been able to take advantage of the cooler afternoon thanks to the rain (that provided the mud).

If I had run on the treadmill, I could have watched an episode of I Was Bitten or Gossip Girl on Netflix.

If I had run on the treadmill, I would have been bored.

Marathon training

This is what the first three weeks for training for my first marathon looks like.  I’ve had good runs and bad runs, but I know that as I press on the good ones will outnumber the bad and that it will all be worth it when I cross the finish line.  There was time when I didn’t think I could do a half.  Now I have done several of those and consider that mileage to be routine.  I am sure I will have to eat those words at some point, but I was ready for a new challenge.

So far so good I guess.  I’ve been doing a pushup challenge that has three workouts a week.  It is the 100 pushups workout (http://hundredpushups.com).  I’ve done it before, but never made it to the end.  I definitely think it is pretty effective.  At the moment, I am really needing to focus and regroup regarding my stretching and nutrition.  Food has been a complete free-for-all lately.  I am hoping to make this week much better.  I found a great set of yoga stretches for runners and will be working to use those as my mileage increases.

Crossing my fingers that I don’t wreck my husband’s Harley while he is 8,000 miles away!

Happy running…
